The Graham Crack continues. This last trip into the crack we decided on just a two man team since the survey was caught up and the only real lead had stopped Miles about 12’ past the dig face. The cave was keeping true to form and not giving and signs of changing its character. Yvonne and I headed in once again to change that.
We took our time getting to the pit so we could take in some sun. As we rigged the rope the sun went in and we were left with a sloppy wet hole and a pile of gear. We did the drop and a quick drop to the bottom of the cave in great time. Even the trip through the crack seemed short.
I had made a small hole up onto a bridge in the ceiling that took a bypass over the lower canyon that had become a dig at water level. This got Bob and Miles into the way on last trip. After some finishing touches on the window up we were soon to where Miles feet had stopped and our next dig face.
We took away one shelf to start a ceiling level crawl and onto the bench of a 4’ horseshoe turn. That took awhile to pass because the whole bench had to come down for the 4’. After wrestling and hammering with two big rocks I backed up to where Yvonne was comfortably crouched in the passage.
She had noticed that we were both bleeding on our hands from the digging and crawling back and forth over the sharp rocks. It was a very brutal dig.
We hit a straight section past the U turn and were only able to get halfway down the 20’ long section before running out of energy. Miles however will fit with a hammer and will be able to go out of sight. This may stay open or get him down to the bottom of the canyon to see if we should going high or low.
After explaining the geology to Devin it appears that we may be in another Puppet Buster. This should mean another big drop. Let’s hope so I don’t have to dig in big drops!
