Kimble's:

Barry Horner and I had a good trip into Kimble's yesterday, Saturday 4/8/04. We rappelled down the 170-foot entrance pit around 11:30 am, after a nice breakfast at the Gateway, then proceeded towards the dig, helping each other by passing our four packs through the constrictions and down the tight slots. Once at the bottom of the cable ladder, we entered the Graham's Crack and wormed our way to the front. We had stopped last time (two months ago) at a place where we could proceed either by dropping downwards to the stream level, which meant belly-crawling in the water, or by climbing upwards into an higher level in the same fissure. Miles Drake and Bob Alderson had briefly checked out that passage and seemed to think it went, so we decided to try the upper route.

After opening up the hole leading to that passage, we found that it was not much better there than below, but at least it was dry. We spent the next few hours removing corner after corner of this crazy passage, which continues to be full of tight meanders and horseshoe turns. After having used up both batteries of the drill, we had progressed by about 30 feet. The quarters were very tight in there, even tighter than before, which made it quite a workout moving ourselves and the gear back and forth during the enlargement efforts.

But little by little, we are making progress. I just hope it opens up soon! There is never any way of telling, since no matter where you look (up, down, ahead) your view is always obstructed by tight meanders: it's a wiggly fissure in all directions, plan and profile... But the wind is good, and we can hear a waterfall ahead, although it certainly does not sound like anything major.

We packed up and struggled back to the little dome, where we stretched our weary and bashed-up limbs. We ascended out around 7 pm, just as the sun was setting over the western mountain ridge. This is the 5th trip into Kimble's for Barry, and the 4th one for me. Let's hope we soon shall be able to walk erect again beyond this tortured Graham's Crack!

Yvonne
