Caving equipment is available for rent at a reasonable rate. We try to maintain at least 10 complete sets of equipment, plus miscellaneous extras. Requests are rarely turned down due to lack of gear. A complete set includes helmet, electric light, cave pack, and carrier for battery pack. We currently have 10 UIAA-approved climbing helmets and a number of antiquated hardhats. The lights are electric Justrites which have a focusable beam and use 4 D cells. Users supply their own batteries.

Reservations of at least one week in advance are recommended. If you wait until the last minute, you may not get any equipment.

A set including one pack, helmet, and light rents for $2.50 per trip. There is usually no charge for sets that are picked up but not actually used (due to dropouts from your trip, etc.).

All equipment must be returned in the same condition as when picked up. This means all equipment must be mud and dirt free before it is returned. The equipment must be returned as soon as possible after your trip so that others may use the equip¬ment.

It is up to the renters to make themselves aware of good caving practices. In renting this equipment the Potomac Speleological Club assumes no responsibility for the actions of those persons renting the equipment. A liability form is now in use and must be completed in order to rent equipment from the equipment pool. Minors must have their parent’s or guardian’s signature. These forms are to be turned in when the equipment is returned.
